Tips for reducing your premium
- Shop around: choose the best
company for you, e.g those specialising in younger
drivers.
- Use the internet: internet companies
have low overheads and pass these savings on to you.
- Anti-theft: fitting an approved
car alarm or immobiliser to your car can significantly
reduce premiums.
- Multi-car discount: insuring
all your cars with the same company may entitle you
to a discount.
- Other types of insurance: some
insurers offer disounts if you take out other kinds
of insurance with them as well, for instance taking
out car and home insurance.
- New car: when buying a new car
check which insurance group it is in, as this can
vary greatly between similar vehicles.
- Old car: if you have an old car
and it is in an accident the most you will get from
your insurance is the market price of the vehicle,
which may in this case be very low. In this situation
it is probably not worth paying the extra for comprehensive
cover.
- Voluntary excess: choosing the
highest voluntary excess (if offered) can drastically
reduce your premium.
- Advanced driving: some insurers
offer discounts if you have taken an advance driving
course, since you are deemed to be a safer driver.
Visit the Institute of Advanced Motorists at http://www.iam.org.uk
for more information.
- Young drivers: if there are young drivers in your household
then insure them for the oldest and cheapest of your available cars.
- Modifications: can lead to increased premiums. It is worth checking
with your insurers before making any modifications.
- No claims: be careful not to lose your no claims discount. For
minor bumps and scrapes it is probably not worth claiming and losing all or part of
your no claims discount. Insurance is intended to protect you in the case of large accidents.
- Garage: use it to reduce premiums.
- Older driver: look for an insurance company has policies designed for you.
- Imported cars: are often expensive to repair since parts are hard to obtain.
For most insurance companies this will increase your premiums. There are some, however, who cater
for imported cars. See "Specialist Insurance" in our directory.
- Low mileage discount: if you do not use your car often you may be entitled
to a low mileage discount.
